Brick walls and billowing sheer white curtains welcome guests into the rustic and romantic charm of this popular Hermosa Beach restaurant. There are candles on tabletops, candles on wine racks, candles on window ledges, candles quite literally everywhere. It is the spot to impress a date, especially if money is no object. Start with a cheese and charcuterie board to share; a few of the meats are directly from Italy. There is also a winning dish of sautéed shrimp over creamy polenta that is small in size yet full of flavor. Pastas are mostly homemade, and the ideal portion to share as a middle course. Light gnocchi is topped with a cream-rich lobster sauce, while pappardelle is a delicate bed for earthy, butter-coated porcini mushrooms. Large plates are straightforward and solidly executed. Rack of lamb is baked rather than grilled, and served alongside crispy roasted potatoes and green beans. There’s even cuttlefish, slow-cooked in a tomato sauce. For dessert, don’t skip the profiteroles smothered in melted chocolate. A comprehensive wine list focuses on varietals from Italy, especially lesser-known labels.
