 Little in size, yes, but flavor? Anyone who has ever eaten at Mary Ann Vitale's tiny Italian eatery knows the answer to that. A local La Jolla favorite, La Taverna takes pains to ensure everything you eat is made in-house---from the bread she places on your table, to the sausages on your plate, to the sauce covering them. These extra steps mean a lot in terms of flavor, and chef-owner Vitale's choice of rustic Italian recipes doesn't hurt either. Don't miss the salad of mixed greens, pomegranate vinaigrette, candied pistachios and goat cheese served with warm focaccia or the pan-roasted shrimp with garlic and arugula-basil pesto. Pray the amazingly light potato gnocchi or the Sicilian-style fennel sausages are on the menu when you visit---both are sure bets.
