What don't we love about La Vache? We could eat here every night of the week: noshing on baked Brie and grilled bread, country-style pâté, cream of tomato and crème fraîche soup and garlicky escargots. And don't even get us started on the thyme- and rosemary-scented french fries---the skinniest pommes frites in town. It's hard not to order the cassoulet every time, but when we can force ourselves, we like the biftek sandwich (served on crisp French rolls with grilled onions, mushrooms and avocado) and the boeuf bourguignon (the classic simmered with red wine, mushrooms, onions, bacon and potatoes). Seafood lovers don't despair---the flaky halibut with whole-grain mustard cream sauce; the fisherman's stew with salmon, sea bass and shrimp; and the scallops served on puff pastry with saffron cream are just as delicious. This is the type of dependable, casual fare that keeps San Diegans coming back again and again. At La Vache, the staff is friendly, the prices are modest and the food is deeply flavorful. We love it all.
