| LaLola is a casual neighborhood restaurant in Russian Hill that caters to a mainly walk-in crowd and features bites from Spain. The exotic aromas wafting from its big open kitchen combined with an abundance of modern, high tables with stools (evocative of bar seating) can’t help but draw in passersby. Table accents such as open containers to hold utensils and napkin dispensers keep in step with the restaurant's laid-back vibe. The menu is organized by price, which helps with tab management. In the $5-bracket, diners can savor something as simple as a traditional Spanish and potato omelet or more creative fare such as the “octopop,” grilled baby octopus served on skewers. Grandma’s Coquettes, a fritter filled with creamy codfish, are addictive. Another pleasant surprise is tapas-size chicken and pork paella and tender beef skewers paired with a red pepper and almond sauce. End the meal with the goat milk cheesecake, a mild dessert reminiscent of panna cotta. Wines are exclusively Spanish, span an impressive number of regions, and can be ordered by the glass, bottle, or half-glass. |
