Lameloise Restaurant Review

: The first thing you’ll notice about this rambling old village house, handed down through three generations of the Lameloise family, is how warm and reassured you feel when you cross its threshold. Although each generation has done its share of renovations, they’ve all taken great care to preserve the beauty of its thick fifteenth-century walls and the white arches and wrought iron gracing the series of small dining rooms, reminiscent of century-old ties between Burgundy and Spain. Jacques Lameloise wears the chef’s hat, and his traditional cuisine upholds the tradition of these walls. It’s true we have a fondness for creativity and invention, but who says you can’t like both Boulez and Beethoven, both Picasso and Bruegel the Elder, both Gagnaire and Lameloise? Asking for something new at Lameloise would be rather like asking for something new in an antique store… We savored a delectable squab with cabbage millefeuille and truffles, and an outstanding turbot cooked in clay and served with its caramelized, onion-flecked jus. Something tells us Jacques Lameloise is torn between his own sense of adventure and the more classic tastes of his clientele, but he does manage to add his own (small) personal flair to a sauce here and there and to provide new (and enlightened) interpretations of old classics from time to time. Nicole Lameloise is a radiant hostess, the service is dignified but never stiff, and the divine wines are reasonably prices (on the whole). Then there’s that priceless impression you get that all is well with the world---and that’s worth the trip in itself!
