Enjoy a Spanish meal and distinctive Spanish wines (many available by the glass) in a casual spot that fosters gathering and conversation with good food. While traveling in Spain, Charlotte restaurateur John “JD” Duncan and founding executive chef Blake Hartwick were inspired by the “ramblas,” or wide sidewalks, of downtown Barcelona. Visiting and working with some of the city’s top chefs, they came home to Charlotte and established this Spanish café with authentic flavors. Today, chef Marcelino Sanchez continues the tradition started by Hartwick. The meals could be in the heart of Spain, they are that authentic, including the whole fried sardines, an adventurous offering in a slightly conservative city. Must-tastes include meatballs braised in Rioja and the Kobe beef with chimichurri (more Argentine than Spanish, but we still like it) and caramelized onions---this dish pairs especially well with the Artadi Orobio Rioja. We also suggest the flash-fried squid with lemon and sofrito---nice with a crisp vino blanco. Finish with the crema Catalana to end on a truly Spanish note.
