Le Papagayo Restaurant Review: Le Papagayo is a friendly, funky place with live music. Tables are packed together with families and couples, young and old, enjoying tropical drinks and a mix of cuisines---California meets Pacific Rim, with Mediterranean and French influences. But if it's not Tuesday with happy hour prices all night, or the Thursday evening Cuban night, the menu feels overpriced for mediocre food. Start with a mojito to catch the laid-back Leucadia vibe, then share small plates like crispy macadamia nut-fried calamari, ahi-crusted crab cakes or goat cheese crostini with smoked salmon. The Wahine salad sports mango, hearts of palm, hazelnuts and avocado in a mango mint vinaigrette. Thai mussels bath in ginger, coconut and peanut sauce, while the lamb stew in Cabernet sauce is hearty and rich in flavor. Thursday is the star as Cuban night, with specialty dishes such as black bean soup, seafood croquetas and ropa vieja, along with rum drinks like Cuba libres setting the tone. Trains blast by, neighboring tables chat and the smiling servers swerve through the crowd. We just wish the food better matched the good vibes. |
