| Oakland gets in on some Mission District action with Levende East, an outpost of San Francisco's Levende Lounge. Housed in an historic building downtown, the room is all exposed brick and dark walnut, with cozy banquettes covered in brown leather and suede. The large walnut bar is a fine place to linger, though diners prefer to stake out a spot near the fireplace on colder nights. It may be a different location, but this is still Levende-style food: American with hints of Latin, French and Asian, as with the sautéed halibut with hoisin, Blue Lake beans and sesame-tobiko aïoli. Those who drop in for a cocktail and a small snack can order a tasty bite from the side dish menu such as Kennebec fries with chive-cheddar sour cream. |
