| Walking down Cortland Street in Bernal Heights is transporting. You almost feel like you've left San Francisco and ended up in a friendly small town. Perhaps it’s no surprise then that locals flock to The Liberty Café for homey favorites such as chicken potpie. And who can blame them? From the first bite of flaky crust to the steaming gravy and tender chicken and vegetables, this dish is a classic. And if you don't eat meat don't worry---there's a vegetable version, too. Salads sparkle with pristine local ingredients. Favorites such as roasted duck breast, lamb and fish arrive at the table with simple, homey sides, and there are international staples such as boeuf Bourguignon or tamales. A very American wine list doesn't go overboard, but sticks to tried-and-true bottles at reasonable prices. Since the restaurant doesn't accept reservations, you'll always find a crowd in the wine bar and bakery behind the restaurant, which offers a short menu of haute snacks. The entire dessert list is alluring, but don't miss the pies. |
