You might recognize this bohemian coffeehouse from the Broadway musical “Rent” in which it was re-created. The Cal-Mex, heavy-on-the-veggie menu offers everything from a vegan tempeh Reuben topped with casein-free soy cheese, sauerkraut and vegan Russian dressing on eight-grain bread with a side of quinoa to a marinated hanger steak with garlic mashed potatoes and serrano ham-wrapped asparagus. Nosh on a bowl of chili-dusted yam fries until 2 a.m. on summer weekends, then come back Sunday morning for some huevos rancheros served up with coffee---and a screwdriver.
