Southern comfort food isn't easy to come by in Connecticut, but the expansion of Little Mark's Big BBQ to a second location makes down home cooking attainable in Hartford County. The original Little Mark's has been an institution in Vernon for more than a decade. The Avon outlet continues the tradition of serving up generous portions of ribs, chops, steaks, chicken and seafood. Ribs are smoked, not boiled, for more than six hours, and pulled pork and brisket get more than 12 hours to soak up the smoke. Little Mark's makes its sauces and marinades from scratch, and the flavors are inviting, if a tad toned down to suit Yankee palates. Ask for Georgia Mustard to top your grilled steak sandwich. Combination entrées solve diners' selection dilemmas. A Pork Lovers Sampler, for example, features two spare ribs, one-quarter rack and a heaping pile of pulled pork in sweet sauce, served with cole slaw, cornbread and a choice of sides including Tumbleweeds---thin, crispy onion ringlets. Blackened catfish and Lone Star beer-battered shrimp are good choices for those who want to veer away from traditional barbecue. Saving room is a challenge, but the Kentucky bourbon pecan pie floating in a buttery, gooey caramel sauce will make you glad you did. With its red-and-white-checked table cloths and agreeable waiters who take cornbread crumbs under little ones in stride, this is an ideal choice for family outings. A separate counter handles take-out orders, and a downstairs bar caters to sports enthusiasts.
