Little Sparrow Restaurant Review

: Little Sparrow’s compact, faux-retro dining room is elegant yet warm with soft white hues --- a good juxtaposition for the darker, jazzier adjacent lounge area located down the building’s hall. This proper downtown bistro sets the stage for executive chef Eric Samaniego, a protégé of the late Charlie Trotter, who also worked with David Myers in Los Angeles prior to landing in Orange County. His menu of simple, adventure-tinged cuisine nods ever-so-slightly to French philosophies and techniques. The edible escapade begins at the first course with crispy sweetbreads with English pea purée, roasted bone marrow, and house-made terrines. Entrées like salmon with chorizo, New York strip and confit potato, and homemade tagliatelle with tender braised lamb neck are standards composed in a way that makes their flavor profiles seem new and fresh. And while tasty desserts like the strawberry shortcake with crème fraîche biscuits await at meal’s end, the proper way to top your dining experience is with a cocktail in the lounge. The restaurant is open for lunch, too, giving hungry workers the chance to choose from an array of gourmet sandwiches and salads. And those who wake up hungry on the weekend can drop by to partake of brunch dishes.
