| So the neighborhood is a little iffy (industrial south Phoenix). But it’s common to find expensive cars in the parking lot, and fashionably dressed folks in the old, renovated home that is this wonderful soul food restaurant. Why? The owner is Larry White, grandson of Mrs. White, founder of the Valley's other legendary soul food shrine, Mrs. White's Golden Rule Café. There’s simply no better fried chicken in the Valley, and when it’s paired with buttery waffles, well, who can resist? The top dish is called KK, pairing three pieces of crispy-juicy chicken, two waffles, two cheese-covered eggs, onions and grits. But everything here is satisfying, like catfish with cornbread, salmon croquettes, greens, mac 'n' cheese, and red velvet cake. Diet be damned, bring on the gravy. |
