Local 149 Restaurant Review

: The massive facelift that transformed the Farragut House into Local 149 includes such upgrades as a copper ceiling, wood-burning fireplace and hardwood floors reclaimed from a Charlestown church. Named after its support of local farms and paying homage to the firefighter’s union, Local 149 offers a fun menu divided into appetizers, known as “schematics,” salads are “nuts and bolts” and entrées are “fabrications.” While the wine list is extremely limited (with less than ten selections), there are 22 beers on draft. Everything here is made from scratch, including ginger beer and even tonic water. The menu features unusual offerings such as fried Brussels sprouts, crispy fish ‘n’ chips made with catfish fingers, and deviled crab salad. Don’t miss the rich beer-braised short ribs: two tender, juicy cuts of beef atop root vegetable hash browns, topped with crunchy crystallized almonds and pistachios. For dessert, try something different like the fried fluffernutter. The intimate tables are just too small for the enormous plates that take over the entire surface. Some kinks need to be ironed out here with service, but the food offers real promise.
