THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Lucky Dragon Restaurant Review:
Stumble into Lucky Dragon off Monterey Park’s main drag (Garvey Ave.) and you might think you’ve somehow landed in a Szechuan province. The setting is minimalist and the food comes straight from the pages of authentic Hunan and Szechuan cooking. Hunan dishes often feature Chinese bacon fried with hot chilies or pickled string beans and a choice of meats. Stir-fried lamb is both unusual and accessible, while Szechuan standards like mapo tofu and water-boiled fish employ vibrant Szechuan peppercorns for their zingy flavors. Take advantage of the restaurant’s authenticity to try a dish with pickled peppers---frog or a more pedestrian meat---as the peppers are only mildly spicy and the pickled flavor lends a distinctive touch. A cold appetizer case is another hallmark of this region of cooking, while hot fried chicken cubes show off the fiery fare for which Szechuan cooking is known.
