Russian Hill hosts this sophisticated spot, a venture of former Andalu chef Ben de Vries, which has quickly become both a neighborhood favorite and a dining destination for the city's tastemakers. The rich hues of chocolate and wine set off the two-toned green leather booths and accents of bamboo. Start at the bar with one of the 14 wines by the glass before heading to the table for appetizers like grilled ricotta salata tossed with mâche and slices of orange, or tiny quail prepared coq au vin-style on a crispy potato nest. De Vries re-creates an Andalu favorite with the Coca-Cola-braised pork shoulder on a bed of hearty mashed white beans and a rich sauce. Lamb sugo coats wide delicate ribbons of house-made pasta, while the hearty risotto pairs tart Meyer lemon with rich Taleggio cheese. For dessert, dip into the Luella ice cream sundae or dunk orange fritters into wild honey. |
