THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Luella Restaurant Review:
This quietly elegant venture of former Andalu chef Ben DeVries is both a neighborhood favorite and a destination for the city's tastemakers. Rich chocolate and wine hues augment green leather booths and bamboo accents. Start at the bar with a glass of wine, then advance to creative, wry, eminently satisfying appetizers such as Mediterranean ramekin-baked peppers and eggplant, perky blood orange and shaved fennel with Parmesan chips, and a potato chip salad composed with tender greens, house-made whole-grain mustard and DeVries' signature Kennebec chips. Playful meets wholesome meets luxe in the Coca-Cola-braised pork shoulder resting on a bed of hearty mashed white beans and a rich sauce (an Andalu favorite, re-thought). Thick, chewy linguine is piled high with Gorgonzola, pecans and thinly sliced pears. Then comes dessert: Honey-dipped fritters, mousse cake, or perhaps banana cream pie with Valrhona chocolate streaks. Three-course "Luella-in-a-Bag" takeout meals, Sunday night kid-friendly menus, and weekly blue plate specials particularly endear the locals.
