| Korean barbecue goes sleek, contemporary and casual in this strip mall space near Del Amo Fashion Center. Walls are pale yellow and chocolate brown and stainless-steel hoods crown ten tables with built-in grills. Easy-listening radio plays softly, so you can still hear the sizzle of grilling meats. A wide-ranging menu offers traditional Korean options like short ribs, pork belly, beef tongue and calf's liver, plus contemporary selections like Angus brisket, salmon and chicken breast. In another nod to modernity, Ma Po will offer to grill your selections in the kitchen if you want to avoid the smoke, bringing out the food sizzling hot on a platter. But cook the meats yourself---it’s more fun and a more visceral experience, and the option allows you to barbecue your ingredients to your specifications. All meals come with salad, miso soup and rice. Customary Korean starters, known as panchan, are complimentary and may include kimchi, stir-fried glass noodles and cooked bean sprouts. If you stick to the barbecued specialties, expect a satisfying feast at surprisingly reasonable prices. |
