THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mace's Restaurant Restaurant Review:
A decade ago, Maces held a proud place in the local restaurant pantheon, but today, its grip seems to be slipping. The bar is still a fine place for an icy gin and tonic, and all the zebra skins, goat horns and safari trophies have endured in Maces endearing if mildly offensive British colonial decor. But when youre dropping a fair chunk of cash for dinner, and when the location and the decor are as fine as they are at Maces, its fair to expect a goodly wallop of polish and sophistication at every turn. We havent seen much of either lately. On a recent visit, the service was at times condescending and clumsy, and the food was frequently flat. The apple-and-chicken spring rolls were dense and bland, just a notch above the egg rolls youd find in your grocers freezer, and the entrées we sampled were leaden and dull. Desserts remain a bright spot, however. If you make it that far, try the excellent caramelized banana tart with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce.
