| THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED Set on the corner of Bleecker Street and Seventh Avenue in the space that has become a revolving door for Indian restaurants (Mitali West and Rangoli were previously in this location), it remains to be seen (or tasted) if Mainland India is going to lay down any roots. As the name suggests, the menu is loaded with dishes that stretch from the top to the tip of the subcontinent. Diners can choose dishes like chicken chettinad---curry with black pepper and tamarind sauce---from the south or lamb pasanda from the north, tender lamb chunks in a mild tomato and cashew sauce. It's an ambitious order to serve up the food of one billion people and, ultimately, Mainland India sinks in a miasma of greasy dishes and bland tastes. |
