THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Malagueta Restaurant Review:
Old Pasadena offers a diverse dining scene, and here two seemingly disparate cuisines, Brazilian and Mediterranean, share a menu. The walls of the narrow, high-ceilinged space are clad in vintage brick and lined with colorful art, while a neon-backlit bar dispenses caipirinhas to a young crowd. For starters, the menu features empanadas filled with avocado and hearts of palm, served with a tangy-sweet salsa, calamari fritti, and hearty black bean soup. Entrées include a respectable feijoada (this, the national dish of Brazil, is a black bean stew with ham hock, sausage and pork ribs), grilled sirloin topped with Brazilian mineiro cheese, and moqueca (a seafood stew). A Brazilian take on stroganoff involves lightly fried beef strips with onions and garlic in a subtly spicy cream sauce over rice.
