THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mango Tree Restaurant Review:
Restaurant magnate Richard Sandoval is behind a totally non-Latin concept in the luxe CityCenterDC. In a perpendicular ultramodern setting, this Thai-Asian eatery appeals to those looking for a creative take on Thai cooking. Along with his business partner, Pitaya Phanphensophon, Sandoval has taken a number of Thai favorites and given them a few twists: very good are the duck spring rolls passed with a spicy hoisin (Chinese) sauce; green papaya salad; sun-dried pork; and crispy calamari unlike any you’ve ever tasted before (maybe it’s the wasabi aïoli). Beyond numerous appetizers, the entrées sound Thai but the flavors and presentations are adaptive --- massaman curry showcases an entire lamb shank with fingerling potatoes, not a traditional dish; whole baked Maine lobster with yellow curry is seductive; and the red curry with duck breast is a real winner. Desserts include mango cheesecake and coconut panna cotta, which carries a bit of Asia to the West. Exotic cocktails such as the lychee mojito and a smart beer and wine list round out the experience.
