THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mangos Restaurant Review

: Sunny is the word for Mangos. From the smiles on friendly faces to spices in the jerk chicken, everything about this little restaurant exudes warmth. The credit goes to owners Annette Coleman, former hairdresser to hip-hop star Missy Elliott, and Rita Owens, the mother of singer and actress Queen Latifah. They bring the sensibilities of the Deep South and tropical climes to the northland with dishes such as fried chicken, greens with pot likker, and coconut-and-curry red snapper. The color scheme is a combo of soft, buttery orange and Granny Smith apple green. Art work from a nearby African gallery adorns the walls. There are tall candles and fresh flowers on the tabletops. And dining here is as comfortable for a table of two as a family of ten.

Mangos of New Jersey

Mangos of New Jersey in Hackensack provides a warm and colorful vibe, from the art to the vibrantly painted walls. However, that's where its charm ends.

Took advantage of the dinner specials and ordered Southern Fried Chicken, Collard Greens and Mac and Cheese. My companion also ordered the Southern Fried Chicken with White Rice and peas and Sweet Plantains. The chicken was undercooked, the collards slimy, the white rice and peas came as red beans and rice, and the sweet plantains came as candied yams. The service was poor, the waitress forgetting to bring a requested glass of water and ignored us while she tended to a larger party right next to us. When we asked about the dessert, we were told that they did not carry the first selection of the 4 item dessert menu We had to get our own "to go" containers (not even the dog ate the chicken) and make our way from the overheated second level to the cash register in order to get our own check. We couldn't get out of there fast enough! Southern indeed! That's an insult to the cuisine they pretend to represent!

The only saving grace is the art. Beautifully represented and displayed. Mangos gives off a warm inviting vibe...but, that's about it.
