THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Manhattan Restaurant Review:
Glass-etched doors open into the impressive foyer decorated with a three-dimensional glass replica of the New York skyline. Popular with the locals and with entertainers in town to perform on the Strip, this beautiful 80-seat restaurant with vaulted ceilings, soft lighting and elegant white columns that serve as room dividers, is bedecked with flowers and comfortable booths. Many of the tuxedo-clad captains and waiters have had years of experience in Strip hotel gourmet rooms. Try the baked oysters Francoise with shrimp and crab topped with hollandaise. The salmon carpaccio topped with sun-dried tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil and capers is a winner. Order the Caesar salad created tableside by a captain wholl regale you with its Tijuana, Mexico origin, a fascinating history. Youll like the cannelloni filled with lean ground veal and spinach, and the signature mezzaluna (half moon-shaped) pasta filled with seafood topped with crab sauce prepared by the chef from Tuscany, Italy, where he grew up in his mothers trattoria kitchens. New York steak is sautéed with cracked pepper and deglazed with Cognac. A house specialty, sautéed veal saltimbocca is topped with prosciutto and mozzarella. A nice selection of wines by the glass complements the hearty fare. Almost Heaven is the name for the heavenly Gianduja (chocolate) ice cream made in-house. Among other enhancements is the cigar room cum humidor named for A.J. Pellegrino. A singer-piano player keeps things lively in the always-busy-with-the-hip-crowd bar-lounge, where the signature drink is the Manhattan made with Seagrams 7 Crown and Cinzano vermouth.
