| One of the area's few authentic Filipino restaurants, Manila Café is a humble destination with no frills but with cheery white walls plastered with color snapshots. It looks and feels like a family kitchen, and it's tempting to forego ordering from the menu to take advantage of the small, aromatic selection on the buffet display. However, if none of these dishes look familiar, ask for guidance from the staff. Simpler would be to scan the menu with its English translations and select the pork or chicken adobo (a rich vinegary stew that may well be a national favorite), pancit bihon (noodles sautéed with shrimp), and for dessert, the merienda favorite, halo halo with ice cream (crushed ice topped with sweetened fruits, milk and ice cream). Want to impress your friends at a dinner party? Serve (with one day advance notice) the lechon (whole roasted pig), plus some Filipino side dishes. |
