THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mao Asian Bistro & Sushi Bar Restaurant Review:
Swank, slick and glitzy (there are even individual, mini movie screens in the bathroom stalls showing Godzilla films), this restaurant is a food and watering hole for the ultra-hip. It's the place to see and be seen. There is lots of red---luxurious red curtains, Mao's Little Red Book menu covers, ever-changing bar lights---considered the color of wealth in Asia. The food is good (but won't knock your socks off) and elegantly presented on chic glass dinnerware. Our favorite dishes are the super-fresh sushi, sashimi and light-as-air tempura. Try the chili- and garlic-coated edamame and the hot-and-sour soup (satisfyingly full of juicy slivers of smoked duck). Desserts are another high point, especially the white and dark chocolate terrine and the rum-glazed pineapple with macadamia ice cream. Even with reservations the wait on weekends can sometimes be two hours or more, but seats usually become available at the bar-like communal table. Sunday evening is a slower time. The restaurant closes at midnight, but the young and restless stay for drinks until 2 a.m.
