With its red-checkered tablecloths, walls loaded with autographed photos of celebs who’ve dined here, old wooden booths and the down-home fragrance of barbecue wafting through it all, this comfortable spot is a Twin Cities institution. Since l946, the meats---spareribs, baby-backs, brisket, chicken---have been smoked over hickory, apple, cherry and oak woods in a brick pit. Our standard order is for the slab of meaty, dry-spice-rubbed baby-back ribs served with sauce on the side (classic or hot). The chicken is a close second choice; we like biting through the crisp skin to get at the moist, smoky meat beneath. Sides like baked beans, french fries and coleslaw are good enough. And if you need something sweet later, there’s the Market’s all-American, cherry-topped hot fudge sundae.
