THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Market Tavern Restaurant Review:
With the closing of Harry’s Tap Room in Clarendon, some may mourn the demise of a great hamburger or two. But what has sprung up in the meantime is Market Tavern, thanks to the partnership of restaurant maven Michael Sternberg and chef Richard Beckel. Downstairs is a bar with draft beers, wines, cocktails and special bar foods, while upstairs, the Chophouse side of the business is for fine-dining with a steakhouse dazzle. The problem: what to choose for dinner. You can’t misstep with the creamy, sherry-laced lobster bisque, stacked fried green tomatoes, or the warm asparagus salad with a poached egg. The real challenge comes with the entrée: will it be the braised short ribs with soft polenta (a cold weather fave), the lofty veal chop with roasted peppers, or finally, the cedar plank-roasted salmon filet? Much more fills the menu, and you may just end up eating a grilled bone-in rib-eye with a red wine herb butter. For dessert, don’t skip the crème brûlée, unless you opt for the bread pudding.
