Marketplace Restaurant Restaurant Review: The front of the house at Marketplace Restaurant is deceptive. Deli cases containing gourmet fare popular with downtown's workforce give it the appearance of a Euro-inflected grocery. But past the cases, stylishly appointed rooms begin with a bar where live jazz plays many nights a week, and dining areas are decorated with custom glass and fabrics, and appointed with fireplaces and water features. A furnished, covered patio tucked away off of one dining room feels like an urban secret garden. Chef Dallas McGarity's menu taps local producers' bounty in such dishes as baked Capriole goat cheese fondue; spinach salad dressed in maple-bourbon vinaigrette, which contains Sheltowee Farms mushrooms; and the shrimp and grits (from Weisenberger Mills) spiked with pork belly and ginger-scallion sauce. More recommended dishes include the sesame-seared salmon served with a fragrant lime-ginger-hoisin sauce; green pea and bacon risotto seasoned with white truffle oil; and beef tenderloin with bourbon demi-glace. After the savory flavors of the starters and entrées, ask about the cheesecake flavor of the evening for a sweet ending. The bar boasts a fine selection of American craft beers on draft, a well-chosen international wine list and, not surprisingly, since this is Louisville, a very good selection of bourbons.
