Marketplace Restaurant Restaurant Review: Marketplace Restaurant’s front-of-the-house is deceptive. Deli cases containing gourmet fare popular with downtown's workforce give it the appearance of a Euro-inflected grocery. But past them, stylishly appointed rooms begin with a bar where live jazz plays many nights a week, and dining areas are decorated with custom glass and fabrics and appointed with fireplaces and water features. A furnished, covered patio tucked away off of one dining room feels like an urban secret garden. Chef Dallas McGarity’s New American plates burst with color and flavor. Examples of his creations drawing on international influences as diverse as Asian and Italian (with a sprinkling of Southern) are sea bass with polenta and bourbon hoisin, a pork chop with kale and kimchi and sorghum mustard, and curried black bean fritters. Starters include roasted Brussels sprouts and bacon-and-spinach risotto fritters. Consider the spinach, bacon and feta salad with bourbon dressing. Knowledgeable servers make thoughtful wine and drink suggestions; a craft cocktail program and a wine cruvinet system supply fine beverages. Try the shareable portion of chocolate-nut Derby Pie. The downtown location makes this a handy stop for before or after the theater or concerts.
