Mason Pacific Restaurant Review

: This cozy neighborhood bistro with colorful cable cars rumbling past its front windows is a heartwarming exercise in contrasts: New American cuisine and nostalgia, luxury and rusticity. Veteran chef Sean McTiernan (Delfina, Rose Pistola) uses ever-shifting, always-daring hyper-seasonal ingredient combinations --- think horseradish yogurt, char oil, bee pollen, rutabaga "spaghetti." Products are purchased almost entirely at nearby farmers markets and used in original creations such as shredded cauliflower with golden raisins and Marcona almonds; sturdy New York steak with chestnuts and orange gastrique; beets with lemon confit; and creamy, salty-sweet kabocha purée with brown butter, chestnuts, fried kale and candied oranges. This delightful drama pervades sides such as light-as-air potato skins and earthy wild mushrooms with pickled ramps and vermouth. An extensive wine list favors Italy and France; try the indulgent chocolate-peanut butter pot de crème for dessert. Workers scrape crumbs off white-covered tables between courses, enhancing a smiling elegance that silently asks: "You realize you're being pampered, right?"
