Masterpiece Restaurant Review

: Yellow walls and framed honors are the only décor in this Szechuan restaurant. Chef/owner Liu Rui is cheerful and eager to greet customers when he's not busy cooking. Rui hails from Harbin, a city in northeastern China, and he chuckles remembering how cold it is there, different from the environment in which he currently operates. His restaurant has become so popular he had to expand into the adjacent space. We like everything we've had here, from the heat-infused cold noodles to a pork belly preparation that has been steamed and bathed in a mysterious brown sauce. It comes to the table cut into four precise squares, and is so rich we suggest enjoying one and taking the others home so as to be able to eat anything else. Salt-and-pepper squid are flecked with sweet sautéed onion and minced cilantro. Some dishes reach up to six peppers in heat level, requiring a substantial hot pepper tolerance. Don't look for dessert. No alcohol is served but guests may bring their own wine without incurring a corkage fee.
