Dining room at Matsuri, New York, NYHoused below the Maritime Hotel, Matsuri offers excellent Japanese fare in a stylish, dark space that boasts an impressive barrel-vaulted ceiling, accented by giant paper lanterns adorned with Japanese calligraphy. The restaurant is the creation of Mikio Shinagawa (Omen) and executive chef Tadashi Ono (Sono, La Caravelle). In addition to a full selection of sushi and sashimi, Ono's menu includes small plates: thinly sliced fluke sashimi with red pepper and ponzu, fresh water eel wrapped with cucumber and vinegar sauce, Kobe beef seared with mustard-happozu sauce; and large plates: black cod marinated in saké paste and grilled, duck breast roasted with wasabi-chive sauce. The restaurant also has a lounge, which overlooks the main dining area, and two sushi bars.
