An Irish pub with good food in Brookline Village? What sounds like a punch line is really a pleasant surprise.

At this Irish pub, lined with a stand-up bar, you'd expect the Guinness to be good. And it is---as are the Murphy's, Tremont Ale, Anchor Steam and other beers on draft. What you won't believe, however, are the huge portions of decent to downright good food. Fish 'n' chips arrive wrapped in newspaper and butchers' paper, along with a ramekin of homemade catsup that more closely resembles tomato chutney. The potted whitefish is better than the mousses you’d find at much higher-end destinations. Shepherd's pie is full of lamb chunks and plenty of root vegetables. And the unbelievable brown bread, baked in-house daily, comes with huge triangles of sweet butter. What’s the catch, you ask? Used to be the massive cramping avid crowds both caused and endured in the tiny space; post-renovations, however, grass-is-always-greener nostalgia for the cozier atmo of old can take root.
