At this Irish pub, lined with a stand-up bar, you'd expect the Guinness to be good. And it is --- as are the Magners, Lagunitas, Smuttynose and other beers on draft. What you won't believe, however, are the huge portions of decent to downright good Irish food. Brown bread, baked in-house daily, comes with huge triangles of sweet butter. Fish 'n' chips arrive wrapped in newspaper and butchers' paper, along with a ramekin of homemade ketchup that more closely resembles tomato chutney. The grilled cheese is made with Irish cheddar and oven-dried tomatoes, while the lamb sirloin burger is topped with minted yogurt. Shepherd's pie is prepared right, full of lamb chunks and plenty of root vegetables and, of course, a potato crust. Hearty beef stew will warm your soul on a cold winter day. We like the rich sticky toffee pudding for dessert.
