| This Downtown brewpub offers lagers, ales and a good dark lager, all served in a renovated brick building. Owners and spouses, Alan and Cindy LeBlanc, and their partner John Roberts, brewmaster, have outlasted many other Downtown dining ventures. Out back is a patio, which serves smokers or those who want some fresh air and a fine view of the urban landscape. As a place to stop after a sports event at Philips Arena, Max Lager's offers a high-energy atmosphere and some good noshes. The beer sampler guides you through what's currently in the tanks. For the kids, get the excellent house-made root beer. The seasonal soda changes from cream soda to ginger beer or maybe grape soda, depending on the season. The red lager goes well with most of the menu, while the dark lager is the richest and most complex. Eats include sandwiches, salads, and pasta dishes, usually preceded by a cup of thick, chunky gumbo. Brewpub notwithstanding, there's a decent selection of wines by the glass, with a focus on family-owned wineries from California and Washington State. |
