Maze Grill Restaurant Review

: At Maze Grill, the raison d’être is steak, cooked American-style on the only high-powered broiler (650C) in the U.K., which gives the meat that distinctive crust. The Casterbridge grain-fed beef (hung for 21 days) has a Thomas Hardy ring to it; otherwise choose from Hereford and Aberdeen Angus, both grass-fed and aged 25 and 28 days respectively, or go for broke with the Creekstone Prime USDA corn-fed variety (up to £43 and aged for 35 days). The meat is brought to you at the table in its raw state, then cooked as you order it. It comes with different sauces and side dishes. You can start with the likes of pigs on toast (chopped trotters with Parmesan on croutons) or go all coy and order fish exclusively. But you’ll miss the point if you do. The room is pretty with lots of wood and light windows, but any of the down-home style of New York steakhouses is missing. The wine list is significantly impressive, though the mark-ups are similarly significant and starting with a cocktail can also push the bill up. The staff is charming; the experience is a good one. 2-course set lunch £21, 3 courses £24.
