Located in a sophisticated space just off East Bay, McCrady’s is one of Charleston’s oldest restaurants. Chef Sean Brock’s menu is low country to the core. Brock even grows his own benne seeds, that’s how serious he is about authenticity. Emphasizing local, artisanal and sustainable food, his dishes vary from day to day depending on availability. Expect such ideas as barbecued veal sweetbreads with turnips and stout-vinegar glaze or local heritage chicken with carrots, onions, Anson Mills oats and black truffles. Southern roots influence desserts such as warm walnut cake with North Carolina apples, caramel and vanilla. The multi-course chef tasting menu ($95) reveals what Brock is developing at any given moment. The cheese plate presents unusual regional and international cheeses. The wine list suggests pairings for every dish on the à la carte menu.
