 McEwen's on Monroe Restaurant Review: Patrons dine in comfort since the dress code is casual at McEwen’s on Monroe, but the gourmet fare is anything but laid-back. Though Southern cuisine is often synonymous with backcountry barbecue joints and dives, the menu at McEwen’s adds a gourmet spin to classic country cooking. Signature dishes include the pan-seared sea scallops with stone-ground cheddar cheese grits, so popular patrons may order a half portion as an appetizer, and sweet potato-crusted catfish. Vegetarians get the special treatment as the chef whips up surprise meat-free meals for those who order the “Trust Me Vegetarian Plate.” The small-plates menu of tuna and beef tartare, bruschetta, and red pepper and walnut hummus is appropriate for light dining over after-work drinks. For dessert, enjoy a slice of the signature banana cream pie or opt for Heaven, candied pecan-peanut butter fudge served with Dutch dark chocolate ice cream.
