Though Southern cuisine is often synonymous with backcountry barbecue joints and dives, the menu at McEwen’s adds a gourmet spin to classic country cooking. Diners eat in comfort since the dress code is casual at this otherwise fine dining establishment. It all started in 1997, when owner Mac Edwards launched his “fine dining in short pants” concept of eating well and in comfort. Over the intervening years, the quality of McEwen’s Southern-accented cuisine has never flagged. Signature dishes include the sweet potato-crusted catfish served with braised collard greens and a fancy version of macaroni and cheese, and the grilled rack of lamb with Arkansas chipotle cherry glaze and bourbon mashed sweet potatoes. Even the vegetarian fare is tempting, given the creative meat-free specials composed to order. For dessert, try a warm chocolate brownie with spiced candied pecans, Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream and a caramel rum drizzle, or enjoy a slice of the banana cream pie. The wine list is extensive and inspired, and the staff well versed in its delights.
