Even though its name is not French, Meet Restaurant is in fact a very French bistro in the heart of Culver City, with the typical red and white checkered tablecloths with white paper on top, owned by husband and wife Sébastien and Cécile Cornic. Whether you are on the terrace or inside, the spaces are small and the atmosphere cozy. You may start with the soupe à l’oignon gratinée (which needs some fine tuning), a delicious and crispy tomato tarte Tatin, escargots à l’ail, or the frisée aux lardons, and continue with grilled salmon, a Prime pork chop or steak frites. But there is another reason to dine at Meet: for its mussels. Cornic, who hails from a family that operated seafood restaurants in Paris, offers twelve different preparations, which range from the classic “marinières” to “Thai” (Indian curry, cumin, lemon grass, coconut milk) via “baja” (chipotle, tomatillo, tequila) and “country” (leek, bacon, mushroom, beer, cream). There is even one with Roquefort---and surprisingly, it works! Prices range from $17.95 to $20.95 for one pound with cute little french fries or a salad, and on Wednesday, “All you can eat mussels” are $23.95. And we must mention the fondue Savoyarde, for which Cornic has his own recipe, adding Roquefort and Morbier. If you can’t decide between the homemade berry crumble, crème brûlée or apple tart for dessert, choose the incredible, warm melting chocolate fondant. The wine list is pared to a bare minimum with only French wines, so we prefer the beers.
