About the restaurant: When nostalgia for diner food strikes at the same time as hunger pangs, enter Mel's Diner --- easy to recognize and a welcome counterpoint to fast food franchises or up-market eclectic menus.
About the food: This menu isn't stuck in the '50s even if the décor is. (Quinoa earth bowls, for example.) Appetizers start off with chili-cheese fries and beer-battered onion rings. Salads are a little trendy, sometimes coming with chicken strips. There is also non-traditional diner food: the roasted herb chicken is a welcome entrée among the blue plate specials.
