Redwood City's effort to update its downtown area has worked well, thanks primarily to the addition of a 20-screen movie theater and, predictably, a host of eateries that have sprouted around the mega-plex to feed visitors with needs beyond popcorn. One such fast-casual local enterprise, The Melt, offers a short selection of grilled cheese sandwiches, a few dessert melts, and a modest number of additional items. Simple and straightforward, the idea of many of the sandwiches is better than the execution, perhaps owing to bread reminiscent of inexpensive grocery store slices instead of the hearty artisan product one might expect. Try it once, and that may suffice. An expanded menu offers soft serve ice cream, milk shakes and all-day breakfast.
