Mema's Cuisine Restaurant Review: Mema's pleasing décor and extensive menu aren't evident from its setting in a nondescript block fronting Kuhio Highway that's not easily navigated because of heavy traffic. But follow your nose, because the tantalizing smells hint at the good meal ahead. The hardest part of eating at Mema's is making a choice from the lengthy menu with its seemingly endless combinations of stir-fried meats and vegetables that blend Thai and Chinese ingredients. The signature spicy lemon grass soup is fragrant and bold, and brimming with seafood. The curries and noodle dishes are boldly Thai, prepared hot, medium or mild (which is still pretty spicy). Vegetarians will be pleased with a broad choice of appetizers and main dishes, and most dishes can be ordered with beef, shrimp, chicken, pork, tofu, or mixed seafood. The specials, often featuring fresh local vegetables and fish, are invariably good. For dessert, try the warm, sweet black rice pudding and tapioca. There's a decent wine menu. Service is generally good, and the pretty setting is exotic enough to feel romantic. |
