Memphis Cafe Restaurant Review: This tiny bastion of Southern-style cooking is located next to The Lab, an alternative mall filled with hip shops and interesting places to eat. There’s something quite odd about the décor, so don’t be surprised by the mood lighting, the rather beat-up tables and chairs, and the ramshackle outdoor patio tucked in the back of the eatery. For some reason, people come from miles around to eat here, but the food seems to have taken a dive in recent years. The chicken-sausage gumbo is rather good, but the fried catfish and pan-roasted chicken is just so-so. Desserts are appropriately gooey and rich, and there is always Dixie beer for washing down all the eats. After hours, this place becomes a busy nightspot known for DJs playing some of the county's best hip-hop, soul, funk and even '80s-style Brit pop. If you find yourself gallery-hopping in Santa Ana’s Artist’s Village, try its even better sister restaurant, Memphis at The Santora. |
