Brasserie 8 1/2 Restaurant Review:

On what has become a boulevard of chain stores and theme restaurants, Brasserie 8 1/2 offers ambitious food and a grown-up setting. Though the name conjures images of Felliniesque dreamscapes, it is an allusion to the restaurant's location, slightly below street level in the famous 9 Building. The design --- of special note is the glass Leger mural covering one wall and velvet on other walls --- is quite daring, while chef Franck Deletrain’s well-executed cooking is Gallic and comforting. Seared foie gras is so delicate it practically melts when it hits the palate. Sea scallops are done right, paired with a mild golden beet so as to not compromise the flavor of this sea morsel. Lamb, accompanied by chanterelles and rosemary jus, is tender and filling. Classic crème brûlée makes the best finish to any meal. The wine list, which is not surprisingly heavy on French labels, offers a handful of affordable options by the glass.
