El Maguey y La Tuna Restaurant Review:

It's no wonder West Coast diaspora regularly turn up at this out-of-the-way Lower East Side Mexican restaurant and proclaim it to be the best south-of-the-border grub in the city. The atmosphere and food are quite authentic. The stark white-tiled walls and the single red florescent light in the center of the room might not win this 10-table eatery any interior design awards, but after a glass of sangría or two, it's easy to feel at home. And then there's the food: with an emphasis on the cuisine of rural Mexico, the menu is sectioned off by standard Mex fare (burritos, tacos, etc.) and specialties. Various mole dishes and the popular enchiladas of the house are unforgettably good. If you really want to test out your machismo, try the menudo---and we're not talking about '80s boy bands. This tripe-laden soup will take at least three Coronas to cool your taste buds and, more importantly, make you stop wishing you were back in California.
