The Five & Diamond Harlem Restaurant Review:
Amongst the African restaurants you'll find a small oasis in The Five & Diamond Harlem, with its inventive and seasonal American fare. Sidle up to the bar, where everyone from the chef to the owner will stop by to see how you're enjoying everything. Cocktails are thoughtful; try the Replenish, which is subtle, but balanced with chamomile-infused gin, ginger beer, coconut water and a splash of lemon. Chile stars on the short and tailored wine list. The mac ‘n’ cheese comes in a little cup but its richness will knock you right over. If your cholesterol can take it, order a second. Seared scallops with Fuji apple, date purée and paprika oil provide a perky contrast of textures and flavors. Phyllo-wrapped cod comes in a portion big enough for two, tender and meaty, joined by asparagus and the sweetness of a parsnip purée. Dessert is seasonal, based upon the whims of chef David Martinez, but if you ordered that second mac ‘n’ cheese, you may not have room for another course.
