Fuel Restaurant Review:

Serving fresh, unfussy Caribbean fare, Fuel is housed in an old gas station in the rapidly gentrifying northern end of the peninsula. The casual and clean ambience draws a crowd that is younger than what you’ll see around the Market and East Bay establishments. While some dishes, like the trio of house-made salsas, are a bit heavy on the garlic or salt, the bulk of the menu is nicely presented. Every time the kitchen crew, headed by chef Justin Broome, also one of the owners, touches a sweet potato, it turns into something memorable. Carb lovers can't go wrong with sweet plantain fritters or sweet potato french fries. For the health conscious, there are plenty of gently flavored fish options. Try the pork or fish tacos, fried goat cheese salad, and the hoe cakes---a must for full immersion into the Caribbean spirit. For dessert, if the Lady Baltimore cake is offered, seize the moment---and a fork---and dig in. The wine list is sparse, probably due to the heavy emphasis on the specialty drink list. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable, especially in regard to the drink menu. The patio features a bocce court and well-appointed tropical décor.
