Gold Street Caffe Restaurant Review:

When it opened some years back, Gold Street Caffè was promptly thronged as the glittering new kid on the downtown block, set in a historic garage that had been renovated into a stylish North Beach-style hangout. But the neighborhood --- and the city --- have evolved a lot since then, and Gold Street hasn’t (other than opening for dinner five nights a week). A now fairly typical café, it emphasizes upscale sandwiches, salads and snacks that either put south-of-the-border spins on their American foundations or vice versa --- be it quesadillas filled with Gorgonzola and green apples, fajita French dips, or shrimp cocktail with queso fresco and green-chile toast points. Results are hit or miss for the price; breakfast is more consistent, featuring signatures like seared sirloin hash with horseradish crema and scrambled-egg sammies with smoked ham and mascarpone. House-made syrups make coffee drinks a must as well.
