John the Greek Restaurant Review:

It helps to think Zorba, not Plato, when addressing Greek food in San Antonio. But there is something almost platonic about a simple plate of feta cheese with tender pita, and at John the Greek, it reinforces a tone already set by the modest interior --- yes, there are faux grapes. Among the hot appetizers, we like the cheese flamed in brandy, or the pan-fried zucchini. On the cold side, marinated octopodi are more rewarding than the cold dolmades, but do give the potato and garlic skordalia a try. The inevitable moussaka is homey and satisfying, as is the requisite avgolemono soup. Homey as they, too, may be, we have sometimes been disappointed by overcooked (by our standards) lamb dishes but have no quarrel with oven-roasted chicken with garlic and lemon. Gyros can also disappoint, but house-made desserts such as bristly, walnut-filled kataifi and green grape pie put home cooking back on its pedestal. The Greek wine list reveals that the art is being revived both here and in its ancient home.
