Johnston's Saltbox Restaurant Review:
With the unassuming appearance of a small house on the corner of a back street of San Carlos, at the demarcation line between commercial and residential neighborhoods, Johnston's Saltbox offers sandwiches, salads and specials for lunch and a straightforward, if limited, dinner menu. Lunch is the best-use case. With no reservations taken and a small footprint both indoors and out, prepare to wait in line to place an order at the bar and then find seating. The take on a croque monsieur comes on toasted custard brioche (effectively french toast) with honey ham, Gruyère, mustard, avocado and the option of a fried farm egg (croque madame). The fried chicken sandwich with hot sauce is like a sandwich version of spicy buffalo wings. Service is acceptable but uninspired and street parking is challenging for those who don't work in the area.
