King's Fish House Restaurant Review:

Cousins Sam and Jeff King, whose restaurant empire includes Water Grill and Ocean Avenue Seafood, have developed a deft touch with fish and other creatures of the sea. The Calabasas branch of their original Long Beach fish house features high ceilings with exposed wood beams, taxidermied sport fish and posters advertising Pacific swordfish and spiny lobsters. The adjacent King Crab Lounge offers a more raucous atmosphere, with sports on TV. The menu is printed daily, depending on what’s fresh. In season, seven varieties of Pacific oysters are shucked to order. Seafood is available on salads, in soup, between bread and over pasta. A good way to sample a number of sea creatures is with the fried seafood combo, pairing jumbo shrimp, calamari, crab cakes and popcorn shrimp. There’s even sushi. From the charbroiler, expect unusual finds like British Columbian red rockfish and Icelandic arctic char. We enjoy the meaty slab of charbroiled thresher shark, especially when squeezed with lime and paired with gooey macaroni and cheese. We also find success with sautéed jumbo shrimp in a coconut curry, with cubes of pineapple and crisp snap peas. Portions are generous, but if you have room for dessert, order a slice of tart Key lime pie with a graham cracker crust.
