Loreley Beer Garden Restaurant Review:

In Manhattan --- where space is at a premium --- beer gardens are often pale imitations of the real thing. Not so at Loreley, where the covered backyard, leafy trees, wooden benches and boisterous weekend crowds approximate a slice of Munich just off the Bowery. The interior of this bar-restaurant, named after the mythical Rhine maiden, demonstrates a light steampunky feel with aged iron support beams and factory spindle tables. The 13 beers on tap, available in half or full liters, are all German, including the hoppy Jever Pilsner, Erdinger dark, and Schneider Weisse Original. The food is “authentically” German, but it’s not quite as scary as it sounds. The thin pork schnitzel flops across the plate with a pile of french fries, just as it is meant to, while the curry sauce on the bratwurst has the same sweet kick one finds buying it off the street in Berlin. The kitchen attempts slightly more complex dishes like potato pancakes with smoked salmon, but the best bets are the more basic fare that’s listed on the bar menu.
